Make room for growing

Tree spacing calculator

A tree needs more room than its nursery pot suggests. Sketch a single row, choose your spacing, and see what fits.

Choose this from your species’ mature spread and site plan.
Your planting plan 5 trees

At 20 ft between trunks, your row uses 80 ft, leaving 10 ft at each end.

An example layout, not a species-specific spacing recommendation.

How the calculation works

Usable length = total row length − twice the minimum end setback. The maximum count is floor(usable length ÷ spacing) + 1. The calculator centers the row, so spare space is shared equally at the ends. If the setbacks consume more than the row length, no tree fits.

Choose the spacing before the count

This is a geometric layout tool. It does not determine a safe distance from a house, utility, road, or neighboring property. Check mature crown width, root space, local rules, and wildfire guidance before choosing the spacing.

For example, 20 feet between trunks does not guarantee that two mature 40-foot-wide crowns will remain separate. Decide whether you are planning an open specimen planting, a managed woodland, or a screen.
